Walton Golf Club Championships

Sunday 26th September

The day had been building for the past four weeks the Westpac Club Championship finals day had arrived at the Walton Golf Club. There were nine divisions of finals playing on Sunday, there were five Ladies divisions, the 9 Holers, Bronze III, Bronze II, Bronze I and the Silver division.

The Men had four divisions which included the Junior B, Junior,

Intermediates and the Senior divisions.

Most finals were played over 36 holes

and the matches were very

close at the half way mark. This year their

were many of our Junior

players had made the finals.


The Mens Junior B had an age difference of 65 years between Bede Higgens and Dudley Jackson, youth ended up winning on the day.


In the Ladies Silver division Erin Hawe and Charlotte Brooks battled it out with Charlotte one up after 18 holes, Erin fought back eventually winning.


In the Mens Senior division Kyle Storey and Rhys Wilcock had a close match with neither player getting more than three ahead. Rhys was also one up after 18holes, Kyle matched Rhys and finishing the match and winning on the 34th hole.


There were many supporters and spectators out on the course

watching some excellent matches.

Walton Pairs Tournament


Our Ladies Spring Pairs Tournament opened with beautiful sunny weather and a course in pristine condition to welcome 120 players from 21 clubs. Once again Murray Munro was the starter who with his usual enthusiasm .ensured the field moved smoothly.

The event was won this year by the Walton combination of Judy Osborne and Jan Baigent with 86 points closely followed by the Thames pairing of A Peters and J Stent. 85, then D van Lierop and S Hazlewood 84, D Sweeney and R Plant 83, B Simpson and N MxcRae 81, D Hunt and D Ring 80, B Ashworth and V Smith , A Gordon and V Gunn,and A Brabyn and G Hart 79, D Tuck and G Bailey, K Maxwell and V Saunders and H Sharp and J Nelson 78, E Perman and L Hay, A Dewdney and J Baker, and R Kingan and V Stewart 76, M Armstrong and T Mellow, J Laing and J Wright, M Barclay and N Galloway, L McHardy and P Haakma, and G Oliver and K Ferguson 75, B Bridge and J Stokes, J Seator and S Hopson, G Welch and K Semmens, M Ranger and R Young and C Jones and J McKenzie 74, S Needham and V Wilcox, A Junge and M Edgecombe and K Kanters and S Phillips 73, C Mahon and S Cornes, R Wallace and T Berg and G Osborne and J Kelsen 72.

The McLean Basket is the trophy played for best net of the day and won by our birthday girl Judy Osborne with a 64 nett. The basket was presented by Alison Mitchell who is the granddaughter of Mrs McLean and this year was the 75th anniversary of the inception this trophy making this occasion that more special.

Heathcote & Kate Smyth Travel Tournament

It was a fantastic day with 86 starters. There were three divisions one Ladies and two Mens.


The best Netts in each Division were Tony Gillies 66, Les Dunn 66 and Kath Ferguson 69. The Mens Gross winner was John Stevens with a great one over par 73, the Ladies Gross winner was June Williams 83. The best stableford winners were Darrin Cranson 40, Don Harty 40 and Judith Stevens 38.

Kaimai Tray Sunday 6th September at Omanu Golf Club The team consisted of thirteen Men, M Dearnley, M Garrud, I Jenkins, M Munro, P Darragh, A Cornes, D Troost, G Pitcon, N Dixon, G Higgs, T Woodmass and C Mowatt. There were nine Ladies, D Sweeney, J Williams, S Cornes, M Barclay, L Pitcon, S Garrud, H Sharp, L Dixon and R Plant. It was a fantastic day and the course was in good condition apart from the greens that had recently been cored. There were some excellent scores by all teams however the winning team was Omanu with an average 40.4 points Walton was second with an average 38.6 points.

The best score for Walton was Peter Darragh with 43 points, the best Lady was S Cornes with 39 points.
